Contrary to popular belief that we write less now, because of our reliance on digital technology and our obsession with social media, we are actually writing more. We use the written world to socialize and engage more extensively with others, via Facebook, Twitter, texting, etc. [http://www.newyorker.com/books/page-turner/a-new-literacy]. Language and literacy are thriving, not suffering.
Although texting and tweeting have enabled us to express our thoughts with the fewest words possible, they haven’t necessarily made us expert communicators. Working with executives and their employees to improve oral and written communication skills has made me aware of the extent of the problem.
So to help people in business become more proficient and persuasive communicators, I’ve created an action plan that provides 3 guiding principles for framing communication. I guarantee that if you embrace these three principles, as you craft your communication, you’ll surely produce presentations and communications that engage your reader and enlighten your audience.
My Three Guiding Principles for Framing Communication:
1.) Your Purpose/Goal
Before you begin to write or create a presentation, ask yourself these 3 questions:
* Why I am writing or presenting this?
* What do I want to achieve?
* What’s my outcome?
2.) Your Audience
You then need to think about:
* Who is going to read or hear this?
* It’s not about you; it’s about them.
3.) Your Words
Lastly, you need to figure out:
* How do I make it appealing to my audience?
* How do I make it persuasive?
* What words do I use?
